Aging pipes at it again

Aging pipes at it again

Poor conditions of an aging sanitary sewer pipe were the cause of raw sewage spill into a nearby creek.

The sanitary line, which is being replaced as part of the sewer upgrade project, failed due to its age and condition. When the pipe broke, it resulted in more than a thirty-minute spill of raw sewage.

The pipe cracked after construction at the site was complete and the spill involved approximately 270 gallons of sewage.

City staff shut down the pumping station to allow for repairs which caused sewage to overflow through a release valve located in a manhole by the creek. Without that kind of overflow system, sewage would back up into basements in nearby neighborhoods.

The pipe was repaired within three hours.
